SHANNON ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY OUTINGS September 2011

Wednesday September 7th


Knockadoon Hillfort which was parly excavated in the mid 1990s as part of the Discovery Programme's investigations into the Late Bronze Age Chiefdom centered on Mooghaun. Time and light permitting we will also visit nearby Clenagh Castle. Leader Olive Carey. Meet at the Catholic Church in Newmarket-on-Fergus at 7pm.

Sunday September 18th

Adare Churches and an explanation of the origin of the village etc. Leader Colmán Ó Clabaigh. Meet at Heritage Centre, Adare at 12 noon.

We are publishing articles from 'The Other Clare' relating to Shannon and it's environs. This will include articles on Newmarket and Sixmilebridge. Thanks to the Shannon Archaeological and Historical Society for permission to do so.

One of our more recent projects concerns Hastings Cottage. A page descriping the project and a history of the cottage is currently under construction. If you have any information you would like to share with us on this history, please feel free to contact us.

I have added an article written by John O'Brien to this page. John who's grandmother was born on Saints Island was related to the Hastings of Tullyvarraga.
